Daun Penh Club lorded it over the competition to top the 2020 National Dancesport Championship.

The Phnom Penh-based club bagged 17 medals, including eight gold, six silver and three bronze.

The 2020 National Dancesport Championship was held on Jan 10 at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh. The competition featured five teams from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap province.

Around 40 athletes competed in 15 disciplines. The disciplines that fall under dancesport include waltz, tango, rumba, quickstep and foxtrot.

The national championship was supposed to be held earlier, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the schedule was moved to another date.

Another Phnom Penh-based team, Santhormok Club, bagged the second spot. The club collected 16 medals, including four gold, four silver and eight bronze. Siem Reap Club won seven medals (four gold, one silver and two bronze) to take the third spot.

During the closing ceremony, Cambodian Dancesport Federation (CDSF) Vice President Chhaiy Chanrithy Solida thanked the players, members of the organising and technical committees, sponsors and others who helped them organise the event.

CDSF President Nhem Morakot and Secretary-General Heng Simon were among those present during the closing ceremony. Princess Jenna Norodom, the newly-appointed Goodwill Ambassador of the CDSF, also graced the occasion.

“Everything went smoothly as planned,” she stressed.

The Ministry of Education Youth and Sports and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk were among those who extended  their support to the dancesport championship.

Solida noted that interest in the sport has grown significantly, with more men and women involved in dancesport.

Solida also pointed out Cambodia’s excellent record in international dancesport competitions. The Kingdom first competed abroad three years ago. Since then, Cambodian dancesport athletes have won a coterie of medals, to the surprise of many observers.

In 2018, Danielle Preap and Viktor Chan won gold medals for Cambodia in the Asian Single Dance Championship.
