Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced and fined a Vietnamese couple for possession and trafficking of about two kilogrammes of methamphetamine and ecstacy which they committed in the capital in 2019.
Presiding judge Ek Polifil sentenced 36-year-old Nguyen Tuan Thanh to 25 years in prison and a fine of $15,000 and his 33-year-old girlfriend Vuo Thanh Hong to 20 years in jail and a fine of $10,000. The fines will be put on the state’s budget.
Judge Polifil told the couple that they have the right to appeal the sentences and fines to the Appeal Court within a month.
He said the sentences and fines imposed were for two counts of charges they committed under Article 40 of the Law on Control for Drug Possession and Trafficking.
Judge Polifil said the couple came into Phnom Penh as tourists and were staying in Boeng Keng Kang district’s Boeng Keng Kang II commune.
The police from the Anti-Drug department in the Ministry of Interior raided their rented house on December 4, 2019.
They were arrested after they seized from the premises nearly two kilogrammes of ice and ecstasy drugs, a weighing scale and other related drug materials.
Later when met by reporters, the two convicts refused to comment on whether they will appeal the sentences and fines.
