Several major football tournaments in the Kingdom that were temporarily halted because of the sports ban will resume next week.
The Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) announced yesterday the dates for the resumption of the Women’s Football Championship 2020, Cambodian Youth League U-15/U-18, Tiger Futsal Cup 2020 and 2020 Cambodian Second League.
Both the Women’s Football Championship 2020 (also known as Cambodian Women’s League) and Cambodian Youth League U-15/U-18 will resume on January 17, according to the FFC.
The 2020 Cambodian Second League will get back into action on Jan 12, while the Tiger Futsal Cup 2020 will return on Jan 16.
Strict health protocols like social distancing, temperature checks and mask-wearing are expected to be in place in light of the current health situation. Cambodia has recorded 385 COVID-19 cases so far.
The Women’s Football Championship 2020 has been going on since late September 2020, with 10 teams on board. These include the women’s teams of Boeung Ket FC, Phnom Penh Crown FC and Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC.
The 2020 Cambodian Second League, meanwhile, started in July 2020. ISI Dangkor Senchey FC, Koh Kong FC, Kampong Speu FC, Phnom Penh Crown FC U-21, Prey Veng FC, Rithi Sen FC, Tiffy Army FC U-21 AND Tboung Khmum FC are among the 10 teams that are competing in the league.
The Tiger Futsal Cup 2020, which is the premier futsal league in the Kingdom, opened in October 2020 with 25 teams.
The FFC announcement was welcomed by many football fans eager to see their favourite players back in action. Fans have mostly been following these tournaments after the 2020 season of the Cambodian League (currently known as Metfone Cambodian League) and Hun Sen Cup ended earlier.
The 2021 season of Cambodian League will tentatively start on March 6, while the provincial leg of the 2021 Hun Sen Cup will commence on Feb 16.
The Cambodian government imposed a sports ban in early December 2020 in the wake of the ‘November 28 Incident’. The ban was lifted just before the New Year.
