Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Lim Kean Hor has urged local authorities and the public to be wary of impending floods caused by heavy rains expected from today until Sunday.

Mr Kean Hor said a low pressure weather system in the South China Sea will continue into southern Vietnam and Cambodia before moving onto Thailand.

It will bring heavy rain to provinces in the central, higher and coastal areas of Cambodia, he said.

Thunderstorms will hit Phnom Penh and Kandal, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Battambang, Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey provinces.

Takeo, Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Pailin and Kampong Thom provinces would get average rainfall.

Mr Kean Hor added that Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, Stung Teng, Preah Vihear and Oddor Meanchey provinces will see heavy rain and lightning.

Mr Kean Hor said local authorities and citizens should brace for floods. Fishermen and tourists who travel by sea should take particular care, he said.

The National Committee for Disaster Management said last month that brief flooding in some provinces destroyed more than 2,000 homes, killed two people and caused at least $1 million in damages.
