A mob in Kandal province on Wednesday surrounded a man, attacking and killing him for allegedly stealing bananas from a farm.
The mob violence took place at 2.30pm on Wednesday at a banana farm in Takhmao city’s Setbou commune.
Major Seng Bunly, Takhmao city penal police officer, identified the victim as Yeb Sokkrey, 32, a fisherman in Koh Along Chen commune.
Maj Bunly said on Wednesday while Sokkrey was walking alone from a pond nearby a banana farm in Setbou commune, it was alerted there was a thief.
“After hearing a loud voice: thief, thief! about 40 villagers rushed out of their houses, surrounded the victim and began beating him until he died on the spot,” he said.
Maj Bunly said upon receiving this information, police officers examined the man’s body and found that he sustained critical injuries to his head and body.
He said that police found bananas left by his body.
Maj Bunly said Sokkrey’s body was handed over to his family for a funeral.
“Police are not sure if the dead man was a thief or stole the bananas from the villager’s farm. Even if he was a thief, he should not have been killed,” he said.
“Now our police are investigating the case. We are looking for those [villagers] who had fatally beaten up the victim and will bring them to be punished by the laws,” he said. “The country has laws and we will not allow people to kill someone contrary to the law,” he said.
Major General Chhoeun Socheth, Kandal Provincial Police Chief, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
