Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a suspected drug ringleader over the trafficking of more than 16 kilos of methamphetamine and heroin in Phnom Penh.
Court documents identified the accused as Meng Ratana , 41. He was arrested on Sunday.
The accused was charged with drug transporting and trafficking and faces a life sentence if convicted.
Lieutenant General Loek Vannak, chief of the anti-drug department, said the accused was arrested at about 3.30pm on after he transported drugs from the Cambodian-Laotian border in Stung Treng province for sale to an undercover officer in Chamkar Mon district’s Tuol Tompoung II commune.
“He was the ringleader. He transported the drugs from the border to stock in Phnom Penh for distribution,” he said.
He added that after the arrest, police seized 15,812 grams of meth and 701 grams of heroin from him.
Police are seeking other suspects with links to the accused, he noted.
