Smart Axiata, Cambodia’s leading telecommunications company, announced today that it has set up the Smart Axiata Flood Relief Fund so its subscribers can donate to help their fellow Cambodians who are facing devastating consequences from the recent flooding across the nation.
By dialing *2020*50# from their phones, Smart subscribers can donate 50 cents, or they can donate 1 USD by dialing *2020*100#.
Smart will match all donated funds up to the sum of 200,000 USD, with the donations being distributed in kind through provincial governors in the worst-affected provinces.
At least 16 people have been killed by flooding in the nation since the beginning of October, brought on by a series of tropical storms that have battered Southeast Asia.
“As the country confronts this natural disaster, Smart continues to extend our assistance to where it is most needed.
Offering our subscribers the chance to give a helping hand to one another in such times of emergency will create a positive impact together for Cambodia. We strongly believe in harnessing the community spirit and generosity of our subscribers to provide much-needed relief to those most in need at this difficult time,” said Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt.
Earlier this year Smart Axiata announced the establishment of the 1 Million USD COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide monetary assistance for high-impact solutions to address Cambodia’s most urgent needs during after crisis.
Flooding is an annual phenomenon in Cambodia and many of the country’s farmers and fishermen rely on the seasonal ebb and flow of lakes and rivers. But this year, the flooding has been exacerbated by heavy monsoon rains that have caused widespread damage across the country.
With the government and relief agencies mobilizing resources to combat the effects of the flooding, the combined power of small individual donations from Smart’s 8 million subscribers will greatly support these efforts to bring relief to people across the Kingdom during this natural disaster.
