There is speculation the five-star Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh hotel will open in the first quarter of 2021. The new timeframe comes after it was reported in March that the hotel would open its doors to customs in September this year.
Khmer Times contacted the hotel’s joint venture partner Chip Mong Group, which is responsible for the building of the hotel, but it could not confirm the date reported by international website Business Traveller.
It was also reported by the website that Group President Asia Pacific, Hyatt Hotels Corp, David Udell said in response to the new opening date: “As Phnom Penh continues to become known as a destination for art, culture, tourism and business, we are confident that the globally recognised Hyatt Regency brand will resonate with business and leisure travellers visiting the country. Furthermore, we believe the hotel will play a vital role in the city’s development and will become a landmark in the city and a dynamic member of the local community.”
Designed by Singapore-based SCDA Architects, the hotel’s interiors are designed to reflect Cambodia’s diverse heritage, seamlessly blending Khmer architectural accents, French colonial influences, and specially-commissioned artworks by contemporary Cambodian artist Fonki.
The development has also been applauded for its use of adaptive reuse. Adaptive reuse describes the process of keeping the facade of a heritage property as either an entrance or the outside structure to a modern and profitable development inside and behind.
The process allows the retention and rehabilitation of existing buildings and also reduces the use of building materials, human resources, energy and water needed for new construction. During the ground-breaking ceremony, in 2017, Chairman of Chip Mong Group and owner of Hyatt Regency Hotel Phnom Penh Meng Leang, said: “I believe that Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh will attract tourists and potential investors and businessmen to Phnom Penh as well as boost the Kingdom’s economy and national pride.”
“The hotel design and its management follows the international standards of the global Hyatt Hotel brand. The hotel will be completed in 2020,” added Chip Mong Group President Leang Khun.
The 250-room hotel will feature authentic food and beverage offerings and will serve as a perfect venue for a variety of events such as weddings, social banquets, exhibitions, meetings and conferences, a statement said. Additionally, the hotel will offer a fitness centre, spa and a rooftop swimming pool and bar, featuring views of the Royal Palace and the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.
At the time, Hyatt Hotels Corp announced that it had entered into a management agreement with Chip Mong Group for a Hyatt Regency hotel in Phnom Penh estimated to cost around $100 million.
The hotel will join the existing Park Hyatt Siem Reap as the second property by the group in Cambodia.
