Boeung Ket football club’s participation in the Hun Sen Cup this year is off to a flying start with a dominating win over Siem Reap FC in the first leg of their Round of 16 tussles.
During their game yesterday, the defending champions dominated from start to finish en route to a 5-0 win at the Siem Reap Stadium.
The 17-year old “Wunderkid” Sieng Chanthea scored a brace to lead Boeung Ket FC.
Sieng opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Taking advantage of the disarray in the Siem Reap FC backline, the unmarked striker converted from long-range to put Boeung Ket FC ahead, 1-0.
Six minutes later, forward Mat Noron doubled the Boeung Ket advantage after converting a free-kick.
The first half ended with Boeung Ket FC ahead, 2-0.
The few scoring opportunities for Siem Reap FC were either blocked or went wide of the goal.
Sieng came through again a few minutes into the second half with his second goal to further widen the Boeung Ket FC lead, 3-0.
Forward Our Phearon scored off a header in the 58th minute as Boeung Ket FC upped its advantage to 4-0.
A few minutes earlier, Sieng had a chance to net a hat-trick, but his attempt went wide.
A goal by Boeung Ket FC defender Hong Pheng in the 70th minute completed the scoring.
The two teams will face again at the Cambodia Airways Stadium on August 20 for the second leg of their Round of 16 matchups. The team with the higher score after two matches will advance to the quarterfinals.
The National Stage of the Hun Sen Cup, Cambodia’s premier knockout tournament, started on Tuesday. There are 16 teams (four from the provinces and 12 from the Cambodian League) that are participating in this year’s Hun Sen Cup.
Boeung Ket FC won last year’s edition of the tournament after beating Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC in the finals.
PKR Svay Rieng FC and Soltilo Angkor FC were still playing as of press time.
