The Ministry of Justice is studying possible legal procedures to liaise with the Vietnamese court on its decision to sentence a Cambodian woman to death for smuggling of nearly 5 kilogrammes of illicit drugs.

The information was shared yesterday with AKP by Chin Malin, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Justice, adding that the possibility includes the legal assistance and the basis of the agreement on prisoner extradition and transfer between the two countries.

For legal assistance, explained the spokesperson, the ministry will appeal against the decision of Vietnam’s first court to the court of appeal.

The ministry will follow up with the hearing of the court of appeal, and propose possible prisoner extradition to the Vietnamese.

Koy Kuong, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, affirmed AKP that the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Vietnam has been monitoring the case very closely and attended the hearing on July 31.

He continued that now the Cambodian woman is filing the case for the court of appeal and the Cambodian Embassy is supporting her with that.

The first court of Vietnam on July 31 sentenced the 27-year old Cambodian woman Ms. Miech Srey Neang, to death for trafficking 4.943 kilogrammes of drugs.

The woman entered Vietnam through Bavet-Tay Ninh border gate on Dec. 2, 2019. Lim Nary – AKP
