Two construction workers died and five others were seriously injured after concrete frames gave way and fell from the 23rd floor of the Mekong View Tower 6 Construction site in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changva district on Sunday.
The accident occurred at about 2.30am at the site in Chroy Changva commune.
District police officer Sok Vibol identified the two deceased workers as Ban Loash, 48, from Kampong Cham province’s Koh Sotin district, and Neam Hing, 38, from Kandal province’s Loeuk Dek district.
The five injured were identified as Sok Noeun, 25, Seng Phath, 32, Cheang Rith, 28, and female workers Srey Lon, 24, and Sok Tha, 30.
Mr Vibol said that ten workers were pouring cement into the concrete frames when they gave way.
“In the process, the frames broke and fell on the victims,” he said. “Two of them were killed instantly, while the other five, who were stuck by the frames, were rescued by police.”
He added that the bodies of the two victims had been handed over to their families for funerals, while the injured are recovering at Calmette Hospital.
District police chief Colonel Siem Sothavuth said an investigation showed the accident was due to carelessness. Representatives of the Mekong View Tower 6 could not be reached for comment.
