Phnom Penh Municipal Court today charged and jailed eight Chinese men and a Myanmar woman who allegedly confined a Chinese businessman and demanded $50,000 from his wife in exchange for his release.
A court document identified them the Chinese as Liu Pin, 50; Chin Zhi, 46; Sung Chao, 48; Zhao Zhao, 33; Wang Winhua, 48; Chea You Cheu, 49; Chov Huan, 38, Huang Long Ming, 39; the Myanmar woman as Ham Tipchi, 28, who is Chea’s wife.
They all were charged with “arrest, detention and unlawful confinement” under Article 253 of the Criminal Code. If convicted, they each face between three and five years in prison. The accused were arrested on May 15 and are now in prison pending trial.
Major Nuon Bunthy, a municipal military police officer, said that on May 12 the accused Chinese men kidnapped businessman Xiao Wen Yang, 43, a construction material supplier, from the Koh Pich area in Chamkarmon district’s Tonel Basac commune.
They confined him in their rental condominium unit in Chrouy Changvar district and demanded $50,000 ransom from his wife.
