A 71-year-old woman has died and five others were injured in a fire broke out yesterday in Phsar Depo II commune in Phnom Penh’s Toul Kork district.
Major General Neth Vantha, director of the Interior Ministry’s fire department, said the fire broke out at around 6pm at a house selling groceries, petrol, and gas. An explosion killed an elderly woman, Yun Srit, while five other people were injured. In addition, many items, including two motorcycles, were also damaged in fire.
“We do not yet know the specific cause of fire because we are still working to rescue people. But according to the information from bystanders, the fire was due to the gas explosion,” he added.
On Tuesday, an elderly man was killed while trying to extinguish a fire at his farm in Prey Veng province’s Pea Reang district.
District police officer Lieutenant Tim Veasna yesterday identified the victim as Chan Oeun, 71.
He said the incident happened at 5.30pm on Tuesday when the victim was trying to put out a fire which went out of control while he was burning rubbish.
“Before the incident, the victim rode his bicycle to his mango farm to remove grass and collect rubbhsih to burn,” Lt Veasna said. “While he was burning the rubbish the fire became too strong so he tried to extinguish it. He suddenly fainted and fell into the blaze.”
He said the victim’s family and villagers rushed to the scene and put out the fire but he was already dead.
According to Major General Neth Vantha, director of the Interior Ministry’s fire department, as of mid-March this year there have been 261 cases of fire that killed four people, injured 13 and damaged 189 houses, 60 stalls, and other items.
