The irresponsibility of some foreigners on health screening conducted on passengers of Westerdam cruise ship made Cambodia victim of its humanitarian act for almost a week.

The comment was made by Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, in a Facebook post this morning.

“Now, the justice was rendered to Cambodia. No passenger on Westerdam was tested positive for COVID-19,” he underlined.

Mr Hun Sen said he was now playing golf at City Golf Club Phnom Penh, thus rejecting a rumour that he was at a hospital in Singapore.

Malaysian authorities announced on Feb. 21 that the 83-year-old American woman, a passenger of Westerdam, “has been tested repeatedly for COVID-19, with the results showing that she is clear of the virus.”

The American woman was among the passengers who have disembarked the Westerdam cruise ship and taken charter flights from Preah Sihanouk province to Phnom Penh International Airport for their flight to Malaysia. However, her husband, 85, also an American, who traveled with her, was tested negative for the deadly virus.

In a press release issued yesterday evening, the Cambodian Ministry of Health stressed that the irregularities in the results announced subsequently by the Malaysian authorities have caused fear, confusion and discrimination among the Westerdam’s passengers and delayed the return of COVID-19-negative passengers to their homeland for several days.

Besides, the press release added, it has affected the honour and dignity of humanity and the country, creating a serious humanitarian crisis.

“Up to now, no Cambodian has been detected with COVID-19,” confirmed the Ministry of Health, continuing that it will further its cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Malaysia in responding to and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the country as well as in the region.

Westerdam with more than 2,200 multinational tourists and crewmembers on board have been turned away by four nations and two islands amid COVID-19 fears, but it could finally dock at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in Preah Sihanouk province on Feb. 13 at the authorisation of Cambodian authorities.
