A traffic accident on Tuesday morning in Thailand’s Songkhla province claimed the life of one Cambodian worker and injured 12  other Cambodians, along with two Thai nationals.

Translating for Thai authorities, Prak Pheaktra said the accident happened at 7.30am as the victims were travelling by van from Sa Kaeo province to a factory in Songkhla province where they worked.

“The driver might have been drowsy causing him to hit the rear of a truck parked on the sidewalk. The crash immediately killed one female worker and injured the others. They were sent to Hat Yai and Songkhla Hospitals for immediate medical attention,” said Pheaktra.

Thai authorities, he said, are preparing to send the victim’s body home and will pay compensation for her death, although the amount has not been disclosed.

However, according to a Thai local media outlet, the accident was due to slippery roads caused by rain.

The incident marks this year’s first traffic accident involving Cambodian migrant workers.

In November last year, 12 migrant workers and three children were injured from a traffic accident in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. The truck was carrying the 12 migrant workers to a longan farm where they worked.
