What to do this Valentine’s Day in Phnom Penh

Anith Adilah Othman / Khmer Times Share:

Ah, romance is in the air as we welcome the day of lovers, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day. What began as a day to commemorate a famous saint is now a global celebration built on other traditions such as gift exchanges, love declarations and in the case of celebrities such as Benedict Cumberbatch, nuptial ceremonies.

A part of the reason why Valentine’s Day is such a big hit across the world is that everyone loves the idea of love – be it familial, romantic or even platonic. There is something about knowing you are loved that makes you feel good on the inside. As the great Henry Miller once said, “The one thing we can never get enough of is love. And the one thing we never give enough of is love.”

The celebration differs according to countries and customs but the aim is the same – to cherish love. Today, Phnom Penh comes to life as it hosts multiple events related to Valentine’s Day. Read on to discover some events that might interest you, your partner or your friends-with -benefit.

Valentine’s Day Couples Quiz Night

Happening at a hip Japanese joint dubbed Rokku, this event tests how well you know your other half. Think of it like an actual game show, except what’s at stake is more valuable than worldly riches. The inaugural event promises to be unforgettable with free Pinku Sour for all ladies before 9pm. Exciting prize awaits a couple with the most points. It is happening from 8pm tonight at Sisowath Quay.

Valentine’s Afternoon Tea

Treat your Valentine (or yourself) to an indulgent afternoon tea of homemade scones with jam and cream, finger sandwiches, sweets, and tea, while snuggling up with gorgeous cats and kittens at the Ministry of Cat. Spread the love to the rest of the furry kids here as you enjoy the tea set – available all weekend from $12 for two or $19 with two glasses of Prosecco.

My Indierock Valentine

French bar Cloud always knows how to take things up a notch. This year, it is dedicating the most romantic day of the year to Indie Rock and as it said on the event page: “Only for cool peeps.” The gig will feature original bands based in Phnom Penh, with the return of Sangvar Day and Simoun and the upcoming “disco-honchos” PSYKIC ELEKTRIC. Grab a cold glass of Cambodia draft beer for only $1. Happy hour starts at 7pm.

Traffic Light Party

If you are looking for love this Valentine’s Day, look no further. Your Mr. or Mrs. Right might just be waiting for you on the dancefloor of Club Love. Be a sport and play along with the theme – show up wearing red if you are taken, yellow if you want to be cheeky and green if you are ready to mingle. The hottest event of the night will feature DJ indigo and DJ Blazian on the deck. The party starts at 9pm.

Valentine’s Day Speed Dating

Meet the love of your life or make a few friends at Mad Monkey’s Speed Dating event. If you need some liquid courage to get the balls running, the party hostel also offers two special cocktails called Twisted Long Island (tequila, vodka, rum, gin, cranberry juice, triple sec and lime) and Drunk In Love (gin, peach and strawberry liqueur, cranberry juice, lemonade and mint) for only $3 each. You would want to be there by 8pm.
