The Cambodia Baseball Federation (CBF) will hold its annual national baseball championship two months from now.

The CBF National Championship 2020 will be held at the Bronze Lake baseball field in Kampong Thom province from April 6-10, according to CBF official Seng Von Seng .

Seng said the tournament is held every year as a means to promote and develop baseball in Cambodia. “We want baseball to be popular and be developed here in the same way it is in Japan and the United States,” he explained. Baseball has a very large following and is among the most popular sports in Japan and the US.

There are seven teams from different parts of Cambodia that will play in the tournament, with Seng stating that Phnom Penh, Kampong Speu, Kampong Thom and Banteay Meanchey will be represented. Other teams include Balaings, Eagle Kings, Smiling Lions, Reachasey Legends, Blue Dragons and Cowboys. The turn-out represents a higher participation than last year, when only six teams took part.

The participating teams will be competing in three categories: U12, U14 and U18. “Each of the teams will have more or less 20 people, including players and coaches,” Seng noted.

Trophies and other prizes await the winners.

Last year’s National Baseball Championship was dominated by teams from Phnom Penh and Kampong Thom.

To prepare for the upcoming tournament, CBF officials conducted a meeting with the executive committees, coaches and representatives of all baseball clubs at the NOCC building on Feb 1.

The national championship is among several baseball events that CBF, which is headed by its president Nhem Thavy, is planning to hold this year. The CBF will also hold the 3rd National Games from May 5-16.

The Cambodia Baseball Association (CBA), another organisation that seeks to promote and develop baseball in the Kingdom, is currently holding its second season, which is set to conclude in March. There are five teams that are playing in the CBA competition.
