Convenient ways to stay healthy

The great Mahatma Gandhi once said, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver”, and he is absolutely right. Think about it, there is no amount of money in this world that can buy you a new, healthy body. Therefore, it is vital to take charge and be responsible for our own well-being.

As the world progresses rapidly, it is understood that today’s working professionals and students live a very hectic life. However, this should not hinder anyone from practising healthy habits that will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

What if we can demonstrate how easy it is to squeeze in several positive routines into your busy schedule? All it takes is the desire to change your life and voila, before you know it, you will be on the right track towards a higher quality of life.

 

      1. Rise and shine

 

Not all of us are morning people, especially when you had stayed up late the night before in preparation for work or school. Therefore as soon as you open your peepers in the morning, your immediate reflex might be to reach for your alarm clock and hit snooze. While that extra five minutes of sleep sounds lovely, it actually does nothing in terms of energinising your body.

The best thing to do is to fight off the sleepiness and leave the bed within moments of being  awake. If you can, set an alarm at least an hour earlier so you can squeeze in 30 minutes of simple morning workouts and you would even have extra time to prepare a quick breakfast.

 

If you opt for morning sweat sessions, you would get exercise out of the way of your normal day-to-day routines. On top of that, studies have shown that endorphins or the “feel good” hormones are released during a workout therefore you will be emitting good, positive vibes throughout the rest of the day.

 

      1. Shop strategically

 

The key phrase to practise this step effectively is: “Out of sight, out of mind”. The human mind is unique in the sense that it especially craves things are within our sight. For instance, when you are really hungry, even the jar of stale cookies from last Christmas would appear delicious.

In order for you to put this into practise, we suggest trying a method invented by American author James Clear dubbed the “Outer Ring”. He recommends limiting your shopping on the outer perimeter of a store. According to him: “This is usually where the healthy food lives: fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, and nuts. If you only shop on the outer ring, then you’re more likely to buy healthy foods.”

If you don’t bring home junk food or other less healthy items, you would not snack on them while binge-watching your favourite reality television show, for instance. You will then turn to the healthier options that you already have in your fridge.

 

      1. Do it the other way around

 

We are talking about the order in which you put food on your plate. Typically, one would always hit the carb section first before proceeding to add on protein and maybe a scoop of vegetables to add to the whole meal. According to SELF, nutritionist Abby Langer recommends reversing the order.

“Fill half your plate with vegetables, then divide the remaining quarters between protein and a starch, ideally something made up of complex carbohydrates instead of refined ones, like brown rice.”

Not only will this ensure that we abide by the daily recommendation of a balanced diet, but also increase our fiber intakes. If you follow this trick when you are hungry, you will find yourself piling on the greens and only a little carb as there wouldn’t be much space left on your plate. It is a brilliant, yet equally simple method to control our eating behaviour.

 

      1. Always go green

 

Sometimes food is not the main culprit. The fault occasionally lies in the beverages that you choose to consume. A cup of bubble tea every once in a while makes for a perfect treat but you should not be coupling every meal with a sugary drink, as this will increase the risk of getting diabetes.

Instead, opt for green tea. Not only it is low in calories, but green tea also miraculously packs a ton of antioxidants which are known to be an anti-aging component. According to a slew of studies, consuming a lot of green tea will also lower one’s risk of heart disease.
