Cambodia’s growing number of electronic sports (eSports) players and enthusiasts will have more reasons to smile these days.

This came after Smart Axiata, the Kingdom’s leading mobile telecommunications operator, announced yesterday that it will hold Cambodia’s first ever PUBG Mobile tournament starting next month.

The Smart PUBG Mobile Tournament, as the event is officially called, will run from Feb 29 to March 28. The event was officially launched yesterday at the Smart Axiata main office in a ceremony attended by top Smart Axiata officials, representatives of Chinese smartphone manufacturer realme, E-Sports Federation of Cambodia (EFC), the media and others.

In his message during the launching ceremony, SMART Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt said the popularity of eSports, particularly among young people, factored in their decision to hold the tournament. The gathering was also attended by EFC Secretary-General Lun Samedy.

“At Smart, we always strive towards introducing digital lifestyle and innovative entertainment propositions to our customers,” he said.

“As PUBG Mobile has demonstrated to be very popular especially among our youthful customers, we decided to launch this mobile tournament for everyone to enjoy one of the most intense multiplayer mobile games with Smart, while at the same time having the chance to win some great prizes,” he added.

All the winning teams, according to Smart Axiata, will receive a total cash prize of almost $30,000. It said that besides winning cash prizes, the players from the 10 winning squads will each receive the latest realme smartphone. As a tournament partner, realme will provide devices for each participant to use during the final day of the tournament.

The EFC and Tencent Games, part of one of the leading internet and technology companies in the world, have given and their endorsement and support to the tournament.

E-Sports, which are video games turned professional sport, are increasingly becoming popular in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia. E-Sports events are becoming a regular fixture in many parts of the Kingdom.

Cambodia has also been sending teams to compete in international E-Sports competitions. The Kingdom was represented in E-Sports in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines, E-Sports World Championship in Malaysia and other major tournaments abroad in the past.

Interested participants, according to Smart Axiata, will need to form a team of four players and register at https://pubg.smart.com.kh/join.

In order to qualify, all participants need to be at least 16 years old and be an active monthly subscriber of the PUBG Mobile Unlimited data package throughout the tournament period. Registration closes on Feb 16.
