In a statement Friday, the Ministry of Tourism said it was granted permission by the government to organise the event three years from now.

According to the statement, the congress will be held in the month of December, around the same time that the country holds the Sea Festival.

The ministry said the fact that Cambodia is hosting the event points to international approval of the way the Kingdom is developing its coast.

In a speech last month, Prime Minister Hun Sen said he encourages the sustainable development of coastal areas in the Kingdom as a way of attracting national and international tourists.

“The cities along the beach should be green and clean. They must be hygienic and orderly,” Mr Hun Sen said.

“Focusing the development of cities on the coast towards becoming green spaces reduces the negative impact of development and helps attract more tourists,” he said.

In 2018, about 15 percent of all tourists in the Kingdom chose to visit the coast.

“We must work together to develop the tourism sector in the country sustainably,” the premier said.

It will be the second time that Cambodia hosts the event. In 2013, the World Congress of Worlds’ Most Beautiful Bays Club was held at Bokor Mountain in Kampot province under the theme “Blue See, Green City”.

Cambodia’s coastline stretches 450 kilometres in four coastal provinces: Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong.

Cambodia became a member of the Club of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays in 2011. The club has 44 bays (from 27 countries) as members.

Last year, Cambodia received 6.2 million foreign tourists, a 10.7 percent increase year-on-year.
