Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Choam Chao overpass on Friday, June 29, the Prime Minister announced that residents legally living along the canals in Phnom Penh will get land titles. He also mentioned that some of the canals, like the one in Stung Meanchey, will be down-sized and deepened.
“Please, all brothers and sisters who are living along the canals – do not worry. The government issued orders for City Hall to find solutions by reducing canals’ size and digging them deeper.” The canals will also be lined with concrete.
The premier said that the government does not wish to relocate residents along the waterways because of the problems it will cause, instead, they will get the right to stay where they are.
Last year City Hall has announced that more than 500 families living along the Stung Meanchey canal will get their long-awaited land titles after the waterway is developed.
