BYD started from humble beginnings when it was founded in 1995 as a battery maker. Today the company is a hi-tech private enterprise covering industrial clusters in information technology, automotive and new energy.
Its nearly 200,000 employees work in nine production bases in Guangdong, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and branches in the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, India, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The company’s main customers are Nokia, Samsung and other top international communications companies that rely on BYD’s production of rechargeable batteries, chargers, electronic products, connectors, LCD display modules, plastic parts, metal parts, hardware and electronic products, mobile phone keys, keyboards, flexible circuit boards, micro-electronic products, LED products, optoelectronic products and mobile phone decorations.
“Almost every mobile phone or computer produced – no matter what the brand is – has a BYD part incorporated in it,” John Gabarra, senior marketing manager of BYD’s branding and public relations division, said in Shenzhen.
Mr Gabarra said Cloud Rail, one of the company’s latest innovation, will soon be tested in China.
“Cloud rail is a monorail system developed by BYD,” he said. “In terms of driving speed, the subway is 120 kilometres per hour, and the maximum speed of cloud rail is expected to be about 80 kilometres per hour.”
“The design of two to eight carriages is adopted, and the ticket cost is slightly higher than that of the subway,” Mr Gabarra added. “In terms of efficiency and convenience, it is still a relatively common means of transportation at the present stage, and the urban transportation service is still in the experimental stage. The first city signing the cloud rail project is Shantou [test line], and the first city opening and operating the cloud rail project is Yinchuan.”
The track in Cloud Rail can be built in a central divider or narrow street. Its advantages include strong climbing ability, small turning radius, adaptability to various terrains, low noise, low technical requirements for comprehensive construction, low overall cost and short construction period.
Mr Gabarra said BYD is a leading new energy vehicle manufacturer that has created a broad range of internal combustion, hybrid and battery-electric passenger vehicles.
NEVs, since 2015, has ranked number one in global sales for three years. By developing and connecting intelligent electric vehicles, BYD is ushering a new age of automotive innovation.
“Our latest Dynasty series, comprising hybrid SUV’s which can accelerate from 0-100 kilometres in five seconds and travel a distance of 600 kilometres with a single charge of the batteries, is our pride. The design has undergone strenuous crash tests and other required certifications and bring to it, Audi technology,” Mr Gabarra said, adding the Dynasty series will be marketed worldwide.
He also said BYD is a global pioneer in new energy solutions and it is dedicated to building a zero-emission ecosystem and strive for a sustainable future through electrification.
“Let’s reconnect with nature and live in a world with clean air,” Mr Gabarra said.
