India scholarship forum for final year students

THE Indian Embassy conducted an ‘Indian Scholarship Forum’ for local university students in Battambang province last week, with the top announcement that various scholarships to India are available for Cambodian students to apply for every year.

Currently, 23 scholarships are provided each year. Selected students can study at Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Doctorate levels. The areas of studies are IT and Vocational Training, Engineering, Commerce and the Arts.

The awareness session on education in India and Indian Scholarship schemes available for Cambodian students was held at University of Management and Economics (UME) in Battambang on Nov 6, with more than a hundred students from the final year enthusiastically attending the session. The forum was also held at two other universities in Battambang.

According the Indian Embassy, UME president Dr Tun Pheakedey warmly welcomed the embassy team and thanked them for the informative session organised at the UME university. Various educational issues were also discussed with him for strengthening cooperation in the education sector.

Various scholarship schemes were also made known as Mr Adarsh Kumar Mishra, Second Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh, stated that India has been a major seat of learning for thousands of years.

He added that India has ‘Takshashila’, which he said is the first university in the world. Nalanda is one of the oldest during ancient times. Mr Adarsh continued that present university syllabus has been revived with modern facilities with three Schools of Learning:  Schools of Historical Studies; School of Ecology and Environmental Studies; and School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religion.

According to Mr Adarsh, Indian universities have become popular with international students from all over the world. A highly attractive point is the low cost of study, a world-class education in a growing economy – meaning, more employment opportunities. India is also famous for innovation and expertise in educational subjects like math.
