Smart Axiata yesterday presented the highlights of their sustainability strategy for last year in an event held at the Rosewood Hotel in Phnom Penh.

In a ceremony to mark its 10th anniversary, the telco took a look at the impact it has had on Cambodian society.
“As the leading mobile telecommunications operator in Cambodia, sustainability has always been the key to our business philosophy,” said Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt.
“In accordance to that, we have to ensure that our business grows together with our stakeholders and communities,” he said.
The company has played a significant role in the development of the country’s telecommunications sector, attending high-ranking public officials said.
Smart has invested more than $1.42 billion to provide connectivity to 98.7 percent of Cambodians and has paid over $370 million in taxes, levies and regulatory fees to the government.
As a result, Smart was presented with the Gold Award for Tax Compliance in 2018.
“We have always been transparent in disclosing all our efforts in being sustainable and this has been evident in our relentless work over the last decade,” Mr Hundt says.
“Through the years, we have also achieved a plethora of milestones in sustainability in terms of socio-economic impact in the development of the Kingdom,” he added.
Present at the event, Hang Chuon Narun, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, congratulated Smart on their 10-year journey.
“Smart has successfully played a significant role in developing the ecosystem for the whole digital economy of the country,” Mr Narun said.
He praised Smart’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy.
One percent of Smart’s annual revenue is allocated to its CSR activities.
Mr Narun highlighted several CSR initiatives from the telco and said programnes initiated by Smart have helped Cambodian students develop problem-solving and leadership skills.
Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Tram Iv Tek thanked Smart for their roles in advancing the ICT sector. He said Smart’s work has empowered women in the country, created jobs and improved education.
“Integrating environmentally-friendly and sustainable initiatives into business practices has always produced better results and Smart’s work clearly reflects this,” said Mr Iv Tek.
