National Assembly president Heng Samrin has urged nine new Cambodian ambassadors posted to foreign countries to help migrant workers while working there.
The newly-promoted Cambodian ambassadors are to be posted in Vietnam, Russia, Australia, Switzerland, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cuba, Kuwait and Brunei.
During a meeting at the National Assembly on Friday, Mr Samrin asked all the new ambassadors to gather information regarding Cambodians living overseas and migrant workers so that their interests can be protected.
“Please help provide them services, promote their welfare and protect their interests,” Mr Samrin said.
Mr Samrin also urged the ambassadors to promote the Kingdom in a bid to attract more foreign investors and tourists from the countries where they are posted.
“We strongly expect that all these new ambassadors will perform their duties well and be worthy as the ambassadors of the Cambodian government,” he said.
Mr Samrin said that all the ambassadors should prioritise the country’s and people’s interests.
“While working there, all of you should think of national benefit as a priority. You have to protect and value the nation in all circumstances,” Mr Samrin said. “You have to maintain national confidentiality and implement Cambodia’s foreign policies.”
He said that diplomatic missions are to be carried out in accordance with national identity and dignity by promoting Cambodian traditions and culture.
Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong yesterday said that the new ambassadors have already departed the Kingdom.
“Our new ambassadors are leaving for foreign countries,” Mr Kuong said, noting that each ambassador has a three-year term.
