King Norodom Sihamoni has praised the Chinese government for its role in advancing the country and solidifying diplomatic ties with the Kingdom in a royal letter issued to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China celebrated its 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China yesterday and the letter was issued ahead of the big day.

In it, King Sihamoni congratulated Mr Xi and the Chinese people on decades of peace and stability.

“In the last 70 years, the People’s Republic of China has enjoyed peace and stability allowing the country to prosper and progress at an impressive pace,” the King said. “Your Excellency’s Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the initiative of jointly building a community with a shared future for mankind, are praiseworthy.”

King Sihamoni and Queen Mother Monineath Sihanouk have been in China since September 10 for medical check-ups.

On Friday, the King and Queen Mother met with Wang Yang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, in Beijing, where the King expressed gratitude to China for its support of the Kingdom’s economic and social development.

“Cambodia wishes to thank China for fostering a deeper relationship with the royal family, and thank China for its strong support for Cambodia’s economic and social development,” the King said, as quoted by Royal Du Cambodge on Facebook recently. “Cambodia is highly willing to strengthen exchange and cooperation with China in other sectors, and promote the development of better bilateral relations in the new era.”

According to Xinhua, King Sihamoni and Queen Mother Monineath met Mr Wang at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

Mr Wang conveyed the greetings of Chinese Mr Xi and his wife to the royal guests, it added.

Xinhua said Mr Wang also expressed appreciation for the royal family’s contributions to China-Cambodia ties.

It noted China will cement high-level talks with Cambodia, promote Belt and Road cooperation and deepen cooperation in all fields.

Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said cooperation with China has brought economic and social development to the Kingdom.

“Currently, we have high-level ties with China,” he said. “We have become comprehensive, strategic partners.”

“We support each other, China is our main investor as we have seen an influx of Chinese investments in the Kingdom and this is what we consider as a new age of investment and development in Cambodia,” he added. “China is our largest donor, both in grant aid and concessional loans. China is our biggest trade partner – trade between China and Cambodia is up by billions of dollars. We have strong military cooperation through regularly-held joint military exercises. Most of the equipment came from China.”
