Six people were injured by a firework explosion during a funeral ceremony in Svay Rieng province’s Svay Teap district on Monday.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at 6.40pm during a funeral ceremony in Kokisom commune’s Tbeng village, injuring six people, including the owner of the fireworks.
The report said that villagers and relatives had gathered to pray during a cremation ceremony when the fireworks were fired.
“During the cremation, the fireworks had been fired in the direction of the mourners, injuring six people who were immediately sent to hospital,” it said.
The victims were identified as Chhay Sovath, Chhnorn Soravy, Min Saran, Kong Sakheoun, Pheng Koung and Sarun Samnang.
Lieutenant Colonel Loek Neang, Svay Teap district deputy police chief, yesterday confirmed the incident, saying that the victims were sent to hospital on time to receive treatment.
“The owner of the fireworks was also injured and he did not intend for the incident to happen,” Lt Col Neang said.
He said that the land on which the fireworks were set upon was unstable and when they were set on fire, the fireworks fell downward and the sparks spread to the mourners.
“We did not arrest the owner of the firework because the victims did not complain and they knew it was an accident,” Lt Col Neang said, noting that the victims have recovered.
He noted that fireworks during funeral ceremonies are part of the local culture.
