Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court on Saturday charged a Chinese national for allegedly attempting to transport a package of ketamine from Cambodia to China via the airport.

Lieutenant Colonel Suos Seila, provincial police chief, identified the accused as Tan Meng, 24, a Chinese tourist. She was charged with drug use and trafficking under Article 40 of the Cambodian Law on Control of Drugs after she was arrested at Preah Sihanouk International Airport last week.

Lt Col Seila said that at about 5pm on Wednesday, Ms Tan arrived at the airport with luggage. He noted that when she walked through a security checkpoint, provincial immigration police officer inspected her and found a small package of ketamine inside her trouser pocket.

He added that she was immediately arrested and police seized 0.84 grams of ketamine from her, as well as one passport and a phone.

“During interrogation at the provincial anti-drug police department, she confessed that she was a drug user,” Lt Col Seila said. “She confessed that she had bought the drugs that were seized for her own personal use.”

“She said that she was not a drug trafficker but a drug user,” he said.

He added that Ms Tan is currently in pre-trial detention.

In a separate case, provincial anti-drug police in Svay Rieng province on Saturday arrested a Malaysian national and seven Cambodians suspected of drug use and trafficking in Kampong Ro district.

Major Bun Chantha, deputy chief of the provincial Anti-Drug Department, yesterday said that the eight suspects were arrested at about 3.50pm after police raided a rental house near Prey Vor Market in Thmey commune’s O village.

“They were arrested while they were smoking drugs in their rental house,” Maj Chantha said. “After their arrests, police seized a total of 51 small packages of methamphetamine, four phones, one motorbike, and other drug paraphernalia from them.”

Maj Chantha noted that they all tested positive for drug use.

He identified the Malaysian national as Vellu Pillai Atanbusammy, a 48-year-old tourist, while the other seven Cambodians were all residents of Thmey commune.

He said police are accusing them of drug use and trafficking, noting that they are still being questioned at the provincial police headquarters.

Maj Chantha said the eight suspects will be sent to Svay Rieng Provincial Court for questioning today.
