Siem Reap Provincial Court yesterday charged a 51-year-old man for allegedly murdering his niece in Sot Nikum district on Sunday.
Colonel Tep Channa, district police chief, yesterday identified him as Run Roun, 51, from Dom Dek commune’s Dom Dek Loeu village.
He said the victim was Lim Rany, 38, who was Mr Roun’s niece and lived in the same house as him.
Col Channa said that the murder took place at 9.30am on Sunday in their house in Dom Dek Loeu village.
“The victim was sleeping in a hammock under the house and then the perpetrator suddenly took a wooden stick to hit the victim’s head, causing her to die immediately,” he said.
“Police questioned the victim’s family, who said that the two of them had no conflict with each other,” Col Channa added. “And at the time of the incident, the perpetrator was not drunk either. However, police were told that the perpetrator suffers from mental illness.”
Col Channa said police accused Mr Roun of intentional murder before submitting the case to the provincial court.
“I have received information that the court has already decided to detain the suspect in the provincial prison [pending trial] in relation to the murder case,” he added.
Siem Reap Provincial Court spokesman Yin Srang could not be reached for comment yesterday.
