Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday convicted a man and sentenced him to five years in jail for having sex with a minor in Por Senchey district in January.
Presiding Judge Ham Mengse identified him as Oeun Chantha, 27, a construction worker from Chom Chao commune in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district.
Judge Mengse said the victim was a 14-year-old student living in the same commune, adding that she was the accused’s girlfriend.
He said that Mr Chantha was charged with sexual intercourse with a minor under Article 42 of the Law on the Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation. He was arrested in January in his rental house in Chom Chao commune.
“The court has decided to convict and sentence the accused Oeun Chantha to five years in jail,” Judge Mengse said. “The court also orders him to pay 2 million riel in compensation to the plaintiff.”
Mr Chantha could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
According to police report, Mr Chantha and the victim met on Facebook in 2018 and eventually got into a relationship. The victim’s parents were not aware of their daughter’s relationship.
The report noted that on January 23, the victim disappeared from the house and went to stay with Mr Chantha at a guesthouse in the city.
It added that the victim’s parents that day reported her disappearance to local police. However, the victim safely returned home on her own on the next day.
The victim’s mother, Sok Ky, asked her daughter where she went. She told Ms Ky she was with her boyfriend.
The victim’s mother then filed a complaint against Mr Chantha to commune police and he was arrested on January 25.
