WITH the sole aim of eliminating avoidable blindness in the Kingdom, a team of nearly 400 Maybank Cambodia employees volunteered for the “Restore the Gift of Sight” initiative at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital last Saturday.

It was held in conjunction with the 10th Maybank Global CR Day — a worldwide effort to bring about a positive impact to the communities in respective Maybank locations from August 24 to October 30.

During the launch ceremony, CEO of Maybank Cambodia Dato’ Hanif Suadi said the initiative was made possible due to a special collaboration with Khmer Sight Foundation (KSF).

“Our employees will be involved in volunteering activities at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, assisting the KSF team on the eye screening and surgery mission, performed by surgeons from Australia.

“There will also be employees stationed at the People Improvement Organisation (PIO) at Stung Meanchey and four other locations at the Provinces to deliver eye care awareness sessions to students and community members,” Dato’ Hanif said.

All volunteers will be involved in missions organised at five different locations across the country, targeted to benefit over 1,000 beneficiaries through eye surgery and awareness on vision care. This initiative, he added, will continue throughout the year.

With the theme “Maybank Cares — Impact, Engage & Empower”, the Maybank Global CR Day is part of the Group’s Cahaya Kasih employee volunteerism programme which is carried out in all countries where it operates.

This year, over 22,000 Maybank employees worldwide will be embarking on various initiatives to positively impact the communities they serve. These sustainable efforts are expected to impact over 14,000 lives across 14 countries.

Various other projects have been planned to be carried out across the Maybank Group network. In Indonesia, for instance, the employees are promoting awareness of environmental conservation.

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, employees from the SME banking division will be engaging with the inmates from Kajang Prison, beautifying the prison nursery as well as participating in a sharing session during a motivational talk given by an inmate who also happens to be a PhD holder.

The Global CR Day was first held in 2010 in conjunction with Maybank’s 50th anniversary, which saw the participation of over 10,000 employees. This event is believed to be the largest community event undertaken by a Malaysian company across its global network.
