The Cambodian national football Under-18’s progress at the 2019 AFF U-18 Next Media Cup campaign in neighbouring Vietnam took a blow yesterday afternoon as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to their Malaysian counterparts at Thanh Long Stadium.

The kingdom’s second defeat of the tournament came via three first half strikes from Muhammad Mukhairi Ajmal, Muhd Muslihuddin Atiq, and an injury time finish from Muhammad Firdaus Ramli.

On Friday, Cambodia defeated group favourites Thailand 4-3 at Thanh Long Stadium.

After falling to a big defeat against Australia two days earlier, the young Angkor Warriors put up a determined performance to beat their high-rated opponents.

After a goalless first period, the close battle opened up in the second half with Cambodia finally breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute as Wut Tola headed in a freekick from Chea Sokmeng.

Thailand then replied with the equaliser in the 68th minute with Sitthinan Rungrueang providing the cross and Guntapon latching home.

At the end of the 76th minute, the score stood at 2-2 with Cambodia notching their second goal after an own goal from Thailand’s Chantmongkol Rueangthanarot in the 75th minute as the Thais then grabbed their second equaliser when Thirapak Prueangna fired in a rocket barely a minute later.

As the Thais seem to be slowing down, Cambodian captain Sieng Chanthea took the opportunity to blast in two quick goals in the 87th and 88th minute to put the score at 4-2.

But while Thailand still managed to conjure up their third goal of the game in injury time when Guntapon headed in Chatmongkol’s corner, it came too late for a revival as the Cambodian scored a famous win.

Divided into two groups of six teams, the group winners and runners-up will advance to the semi-finals. The final is scheduled to be held on August 19 at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.

Cambodia’s youngsters next turn out on Tuesday to play Singapore.
