MANILA (Manila Times) –The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) has recommended the lifting of martial law in Davao City, citing the improved security situation in the area.
The Davao City Council earlier drafted a resolution urging President Rodrigo Duterte to lift the military rule in the city. Martial law in
Mindanao was declared in 2017, but it was extended until December 2019.
EastMinCom chief Lt. Gen. Felimon Santos said his command reported before the council the “improvement” of the security situation in the area that led to the creation of the resolution.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio earlier this year planned to ask the President to lift martial law in Mindanao, saying she had firsthand knowledge on the security landscape.
Santos, however, said that “everything should be weighed” if the President will decide to lift martial law.
