A young Cambodian sailor has returned to the kingdom with multiple medals from the 2019 Pesta Sukan Dinghy Regatta Tournament which concluded earlier this week.
The 17-year old Nhov Chan won a gold medal for Laser Standard and a silver for Laser Mix Open. Around 50 sailors from four countries – Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and Cambodia –participated in the competition at the National Sailing Training Center in the Southeast Asian City-state.
A promising youngster, Chan, who is coached by Som Sothrithypong, saw the competition as ideal build-up for this year’s 2019 Manila SEA Games.
“Pesta Sukan” is Malay for Festival of Sports and was conceived by the then Ministry of Culture, Singapore’s first festival of sports was held from 4 – 12 Dec 1964. Today, each national sporting association holds their own Pesta Sukan. Cambodia’s Sailing Federation received official recognition by the World Sailing body in 2017, the world governing body for the sport which is accredited by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee, providing a boost to the kingdom’s nascent sailing community.
Ahead of Manila, the Federation is also planning to send its athletes for training to different countries including Singapore, Malaysia and China between September and November.
