Cambodia’s Under-18 national football team fell 5-1 to their Australian counterparts in the opening match of the 2019 AFF U-18 Next Media Cup in neighbouring Vietnam yesterday.
The kingdom’s youngsters are chasing regional glory at the two-week tournament which kicked off on Tuesday.
Cambodia have been drawn in Group B alongside Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Australia and play their games in Ho Chi Minh City.
Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos, Timor-Leste, Philippines and Brunei Darussalam are in Group A, and they play their games in the capital city of Binh Duong province.
Divided into two groups of six teams, the group winners and runners-up will advance to the semi-finals. The final is scheduled to be held on August 19 at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.
In Tuesday’s opening round, 21 goals were scored in the opening matches of Group A. Indonesia started the day with a 7-1 thrashing of the Philippines as Myanmar then followed it up with a 3-1 win over Laos.
The young Angkor Warriors next face favoured Thailand tomorrow afternoon.
