Khmer Rouge’s Brother No 2 Nuon Chea dies at 93

Former senior Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment over genocide, passed away this evening. He was 93.

Neth Pheaktra, spokesman for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court (ECCC), said that Mr Chea passed away today at the Khmer Soviet Friendship hospital after being hospilalised since last month.

“We can confirm that defendant Nuon Chea, 93, passed away this evening on 4 August 2019 at Khmer Soviet Friendship hospital. He had been transferred from the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia’s detention center to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship hospital for medical treatment since 2 July 2019. Nuon Chea’s family has been informed,” Mr Pheaktra said.

Last year, Mr Chea, 93, former Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, and former head of state Khieu Samphan, 87, were sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of executing ethnic Vietnamese and Cham, as well as committing rape, forced marriage and religious prohibition.
