Kuwait will mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Cambodia today during a celebration at its embassy to boost ties.

An embassy statement yesterday said the diplomatic ties serve as an anchor for close and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

“The State of Kuwait will remain keen on strengthening, and working closely with the Kingdom of Cambodia in order to extend bilateral relations between the two countries,” it said. “Additionally, the State of Kuwait and its people will continue to support the Kingdom of Cambodia by working actively and continuously for charitable works and humanitarian projects as we have done so far.”

“Since the Embassy of the State of Kuwait was established in Cambodia until now, there are schools and hospitals built in this country under the support of the State of Kuwait that spent $59 million,” the statement noted.

It said in the last 25 years, the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Cambodia have built up a solid framework of relations, cooperation, mutual interest and understanding.

“At the same time, MoUs and agreements have been signed in the field of technical [cooperation], economy, investment, diplomatic mission, tourism, labour exchange and many more,” the statement added.

The embassy noted that over the past 25 years, there have been many remarkable and official visits between leaders of the two countries such as in 2008 when former Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In 2009, Prime Minister Hun Sen paid an official visit to Kuwait and in October, Hend Subaih Barak Alsubaih, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour and Secretary of State of Economic Affairs paid an official visit to the Kingdom to officiate at the signing of an MoU on manpower exchange between the two countries.

In 2008, Cambodia established its embassy in Kuwait, which in turn established its embassy in the Kingdom in 2011.

Kuwait is the only Gulf Cooperation Council country to have a full-fledged embassy in Cambodia. Other Arab nations have missions accredited from other Asian capitals such as Bangkok and Hanoi.
