Dozens of patients with mental health disorders were admitted to the newly built Mental Health Rehab Centre in Kandal province’s Kandal Stung district.
The centre was established under the Ministries of Social Affairs, Health and Interior. The three-hectare treatment facility was funded with a $500,000 budget in 2017.
The centre has doctors and psychiatrists and it aims to address a lack of mental health facilities for patients in the Kingdom.
Touch Chany, director general of the Social Affairs Ministry’s general technical department, on Tuesday said 48 patients suffering from mental illness were transferred to the centre from Phnom Penh.
Mr Chany said prior to Prey Speu Center, Prek Thnork hospital in Takhmao city was the only medical facility equipped with treating mental health patients.
He noted that the decision to transfer the 48 patients was good because the new facility has the capacity to house more than 200 patients.
“This new centre is large and has a good environment for relaxation and spirituality, if compared to the old location,” Mr Chany said. “The new centre separates males and females and has separate rooms. Accommodation depending on the symptoms of their illness are also allocated.”
He noted that staffers at the centre will be able to better manage patients around the clock.
Lor Vanthari, director of a working group at the centre, said there are 30 doctors working to provide 24-hour treatment to those with mental illness.
“We have enough medicine and doctors to cure them,” Mr Vanthari said. “They have different shifts in 24 hours. We also have medicine to treat minor sickness.”
