Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday summoned lawyers of Interior Minister Sar Kheng to be questioned over a complaint filed against former opposition leader Sam Rainsy.
Mr Rainsy, who is currently in exile overseas, is facing a complaint filed by Mr Kheng after Mr Rainsy alleged that he was supporting a coup to get revenge on Prime Minister Hun Sen, whom Mr Rainsy accused of planting a bomb on board the helicopter of the late National Police Commissioner General Hok Lundy.
According to four separate warrants issued by deputy prosecutor Seng Kim Lak on Monday, Mr Kheng’s lawyers Hak Seakly, Pich Sorya and Chao Bunhuon are to appear on July 17 to explain their complaint.
One of the warrants also states that Mr Rainsy, who has been named suspect, must appear for questioning on July 31.
In the complaint filed to the court, Mr Kheng said Mr Rainsy allegedly harboured intentions to incite and damage the internal solidarity of leaders in the government. He also said Mr Rainsy caused chaos, which could destroy political stability and peace.
In a statement yesterday, Mr Rainsy said Phnom Penh Municipal Court would never be fair toward him. Mr Rainsy said Mr Kheng should file the complaint against him in France instead.
“If Sar Kheng wants to be more dignified, he should not play with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court,” he said. “The current court is a puppet courthouse that just listens to orders from the ruling politicians.”
“The verdict by the court is not valued and is unjust because the weak and poor people who do not have money to bribe the judge will lose,” Mr Rainsy added.
Mr Bunhuon, one of Mr Kheng’s lawyers, yesterday said he received a summons letter and he and his colleagues will appear before the court.
“We already received the court letters and we are ready to testify,” he said.
Mr Seakly said he filed evidence against Mr Rainsy already.
“We filed two things as evidence,” he said. “First a recording of his [Mr Rainsy’s] voice speaking on Voice of America and the second is a screenshot of his Facebook statement.”
