A family of three was killed in a fire in Siem Reap province’s Puok district yesterday when the husband reportedly ignited the inferno to kill his wife and son together with him, police said.
Colonel Tep Pumsen, district police chief, said police discovered the bodies of Kong Chamnan, 34, the husband who is suspected of starting the fire, along with his 33-year-old wife Chy Srey Mom and their two-month-old son Meta inside their house in Khnat commune.
Col Pumsen said that at about 9.30am yesterday, the husband locked his wife and son inside the house with him before he set it on fire.
“Police questioned their relatives, who noted that the family had recently had an argument,” Col Pumsen said. “The husband set the fire to kill himself, along with his wife and their son.”
He further noted that the house belonged to Ms Srey Mom’s mother, whom she had run to live with her son following an argument with her husband.
“The wife sought help from her relatives and came to stay at her mother’s house after an argument with her husband, who then followed her to kill her,” Col Pumsen added.
On the day of the incident, Ms Mom’s mother was not at home, he noted. Mr Chamnan brought gasoline and locked his wife and son inside before starting the fire.
“Police came to intervene and stop the fire but all three had died in the fire, which did not spread to the neighbour’s house,” Col Pumsen added.
He noted that police found the three bodies inside the house, which was totally destroyed by the fire.
According to a report by the National Police, the fire was intentional.
“The fire was caused by a man who used gasoline in a murder-suicide, killing his family who he locked inside the house with him,” the report said.
