June’s Decathlon Open Tennis event wrapped up with the conclusion of the open tournament men’s and ladies’ singles at Phnom Penh’s Cambodian Country Club on Sunday.
The men’s draw saw 21 entrants while the female category hosted seven players vying for the title.
After winning the juniors two weeks ago, Ho Sreynoch dominated once again in the women’s events. 18-year old Sreynoch beat 15-year old Chhieu Apsara 6-1, 6 – 1 in the final. Both Sreynoch and Apsara will leave the month next for the Asean school games in Jakarta.
The title of the men’s singles was won by Bun Kenny, widely regarded as the number 1 Cambodian player on the professional circuit.
In the final, he faced number 2 seeded Phalkun Mam.
Bun proved too strong for Mam and ensured the victory and the title in straight sets: 6-2, 6 – 2.
“I don’t want to keep repeating myself, but the increase in the level [of the players] is evident, said Tep Rithivit, President of Tennis Cambodia during the awards ceremony on Sunday.
“Players can now compete more regularly, and are playing more matches so it’s a big step forward. And all of this is thanks to Decathlon who felt that the Cambodian tennis community needs a more regular competition,” he added.
The sponsors of the event were Decathlon Cambodia, Pontoon Club, the Cambodian Country Club and new sponsor in Pharmacie de la Gare.
