Poipet city police in Banteay Meanchey province arrested five men suspected of drug trafficking on Tuesday.
Captain Long San, a penal police officer with Poipet city district police, said that police arrested 155 people, five of whom are suspected of drug trafficking, when officers raided a local casino named ‘Lucky’ on Tuesday.
“They were arrested after police raided Lucky shop [casino],” Cap San said. “They were arrested while they were using drugs inside the shop while other people were playing the games.”
“After the raid, police seized a total of five packages of crystal methamphetamine, 55 ecstasy pills, as well as other drug related materials from them,” he added.
Cap San said that following their arrests, they were all sent to the provincial anti-drug police department for questioning and further investigation.
Major General Ath Khem, provincial police chief, yesterday confirmed that police tested their urines following their arrests. He noted that among the 155 people, 144 tested positive for drug use while the remaining 11 tested negative.
Maj Gen Khem said that investigations concluded that five of the people arrested were the drug owners while the remaining who tested positive were drug users. He added that the 11 men who tested negative were not related to the case and were freed by police.
Maj Gen Khem said that police accused the five drug owners with drug trafficking and will send them to court for questioning, while the remaining drug users will be sent to a provincial rehabilitation centre.
In a separate case, Stung Treng provincial police on Tuesday arrested a Lao national for transporting and trafficking more than one kilogram of ice from Laos to sell to an undercover police in the province.
