China has accused the United States of igniting a trade war, noting that the world’s second largest economy has no choice but to retaliate in order to protect its national dignity and welfare of its people.

The Chinese embassy in a Facebook post on Saturday noted that the US started targeting China in a trade dispute in February.

“The United States is the root cause of a trade dispute between it and China,” the post said.

The embassy post highlighted that when the United States chooses to impose conditions on doing trade with other countries, including China, the move not only threatens the economic growth of China and the US but also seriously impacts international trade.

“First it impacts the role of the multiple trade system. Secondly it impacts global economic growth and disrupts industrial production, affecting global supply of goods,” the embassy noted.

It said China adheres to a principle of “fairness, mutual benefit and truth” as a way to settle the trade dispute with the US

“China continues to believe that a trade war will benefit no one and negotiation is the only way,” the statement said. “Although China does not want to, it will not hesitate to retaliate against any pressure from the United States but will keep the door open for negotiations.”

Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at Royal Academy of Cambodia, yesterday said he supported China’s stance.

“The protectionism policy was started by the US and they raised tariffs on the import of goods from China,” he noted.

Zwartjes Arend, public affairs officer of the US embassy in Phnom Penh, declined to comment over the trade war yesterday.
