After victory over Pakistan in their recent double-header, the Cambodian National Football Team climbed from 173 to 169 in the latest FIFA World Rankings.
Keisuke Honda-led Cambodia stamped their ticket for the second round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 & AFC Asian Cup 2023 Joint Qualifiers after defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the second leg on Tuesday evening, to advance 4-1 on aggregate.
Elsewhere in ASEAN, Vietnam are the highest ranked of Cambodia’s regional rivals and sit in 96th. The ranking comes after their strong performance at the King’s Cup 2019.
Vietnam’s win against Thailand garnered them 4.5 points while they also received 0.7 points for their loss to 82nd placed Curacao.
Other ASEAN teams did not make the Top-100, with Thailand sitting highest at (116), the Philippines (126), Myanmar (138), Malaysia (159), Indonesia (162) and Singapore (162). Cambodia are ahead of Laos (188), Brunei (193) and Timor-Leste (200).
In the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Iran sit highest at 20th in world, while Japan follow at No. 2 (28). Belgium stay top in the rankings, followed by France, Brazil, England, Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, and Spain.
The draw for the second round of World Cup 2022 qualification for the Asia region will be held later today in Doha, Qatar.
Cambodia, known affectionately as the Koupreys, are in Pot 5 alongside Guam, Indonesia, Singapore, Nepal, Bangladesh and Mongolia.
