Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced a husband and a wife to seven years in prison after they were found guilty of rape and sexual abuse.
Presiding Judge Koy Sao said 36-year-old Chan Chhean and his wife 31-year-old Chhea Noun assaulted the victim, a 29-year-old garment worker from Por Senchey district’s Kabab I commune.
Judge Sao noted that Mr Chhean was charged with rape, while Ms Noun was charged with accomplice of rape and sexual assault.
He said that the couple was arrested on August 31 after the victim filed a complaint with police.
“The court decides to convict and sentence them to seven years in prison,” Judge Sao said. “If both do not agree, they have the right to make an appeal within one month.”
Judge Sao noted that at about 2pm on August 26 last year, the victim sought consultation from Mr Chhean, who claimed to be a sorcerer that could help the victim prevent her 32-year-old estranged husband from falling in love with other women.
The next day, Mr Chhean and Ms Noun took the victim to a guesthouse in Stung Meanchey commune in order for a ritual to be performed.
“After entering the guesthouse, Mr Chhean and his wife told the victim to take her clothes off,” Judge Sao said. “He then molested the victim while his wife was standing by.”
“After Mr Chhean raped the victim, his wife continued to commit other forms of sexual abuse on the victim in order to perform ‘love magic,’” he said, adding that the couple and the victim then went their separate ways.
Judge Sao said on August 31 at about 10am, the victim filed a complaint against the couple after she realised she was duped.
