World renowned choir, Philippine Madrigal Singers, brought their sound to Phnom Penh on June 6 for the Melodies by the Mekong: A Friendship Concert. More than a dozen singers and choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio performed a wide repertoire of music – from Filipino folksong Bahay Kubo to a Broadway medley, ending with a mesmerising rendition of Circle of Life. The choir’s visit to Cambodia is just one of the several activities lined up for the commemoration of the 121st anniversary of the Independence of Philippines. The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Cambodia holds the annual celebration in Phnom Penh as a way to gather Filipino expatriates as well as to mark the growing friendship between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Philippines.
