The newly-appointed Malaysian Ambassador Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim yesterday welcomed some two hundred Malaysians to the Embassy for a special Eid Al Fitr celebration.
To commemorate the victory of a month-long fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, the Malaysian Embassy had prepared some of the classic Malaysian must-haves such as beef rendang (dry curry), lodeh (coconut milk soup), nasi impit (compressed rice cakes) and chicken satay.
Mr Eldeen, who yesterday hosted the open house for the first time since his appointment in April, expressed his excitement and conveyed his gratitude to all guests who flocked to Dewan Malaysia, the embassy’s main hall.
“I feel so excited because this is my first time hosting as an ambassador,” Mr Eldeen told Khmer Times yesterday. “The feedback is so overwhelming. We (the embassy) had only targeted about 150 guests but roughly 250 showed up, which is wonderful.”
“Malaysians in Cambodia should know that the Embassy is not here only for official purposes but it is also a place where families gather and friends bond. With this celebration, we also hope to promote Malaysian cuisine to our Cambodian and other foreign friends,” he added.
Instead of the traditional setting, Dewan Malaysia was decked with superhero-themed decors. Guests also had the opportunity to stop by a photobooth at the main entrance and take commemorative pictures against an interesting backdrop. Some of the pictures can be found on social media under hashtags #gengtakbalikraya and #superheroespunraya.
Guests were also served with an array of sumptuous traditional Malay desserts such as kuih seri muka, kuih lapis and kuih bingka.
Some of the dignitaries who graced the event included Princess Norodom Arun Rasmey, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian, Ambassador of Pakistan Amjad Ali Sher, Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission Okhna Othsman Hassan, as well as Smart Axiata chief executive officer Thomas Hundt, CIMB Cambodia PLC chief executive officer Bun Yin, NagaWorld managing director Pern Chen and Almond Group chief executive officer Luu Meng.
