Timor-Leste Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares will arrive in the Kingdom today for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties between both countries.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement released on Friday said Mr Dionisio is visiting the Kingdom at the invitation of Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn.
During the visit, Mr Dionisio is expected to pay courtesy calls on Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior government officials, the statement said.
It added that Mr Sokhonn will hold bilateral talks with his Timorese counterpart to discuss areas of cooperation to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries as well as exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest, including Timor-Leste’s application for membership in Asean.
East Timor became an independent state on May 20, 2002 and in 2011 announced its intention to become the eleventh member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, yesterday said there was nothing special about the relations between Cambodia and Timor Leste.
“The relationship between Cambodia and Timore Leste is a normal one,” he said. “However, they can help each other in international affairs in case of need.”
