The Cambodian government has expressed its gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for celebrating King Norodom Sihamoni’s birthday during his visit to China to attend the Asian civilisation conference last week.

King Sihamoni attended the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilisations to strengthen relations between Cambodia and China in Beijing, where Mr Xi feted a royal birthday reception for him.

During his visit, the King met with Mr Xi and expressed his thanks over the fostering of deeper relations with the royal family and people of Cambodia.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the Council of Ministers’ Press and Quick Reaction Unit said the government expressed its thanks to President Xi for hosting the birthday celebration.

“It is a great honour for Cambodia and Cambodian people,” the statement said. “It re-enforces the Kingdom’s strong friendship and close cooperation with the People Republic of China.”

The statement added that Cambodia does not consider any country as an enemy, and considers all countries as partners.

“Cambodia has been playing a very important role in promoting peace and cooperation in the region and world in order to prevent problems that could lead to conflicts,” it said. “Cambodia has also been actively participating in the Belt and Road Initiative led by Chinese president Xi Jinping.”

During a bilateral meeting with Mr Xi before he returned to the Kingdom, King Sihamoni noted that the CDAC plays an important role in cultural exchange and promotion of understanding among countries.

“The Cambodian people will firmly stand with the people of China in all circumstances,” the King was quoted as saying in a Royal Du Cambodge Facebook post. “Cambodia wishes to congratulate the People’s Republic of China for 70 years of achievements so far, and also praises its influence in international affairs and fully supports the Belt and Road Initiative.”

King Sihamoni also praised Mr Xi for helping develop countries through his Community Destiny initiative.

In response, Mr Xi said that China’s ties with Cambodia show that both countries have fostered a genuine friendship.

“China will continue to support Cambodia in pursuing the development path suited to its own national conditions, and work with Cambodia to push the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation to a new level,” he said.
