The Defence Ministry yesterday urged authorities to investigate a Facebook user suspected of impersonating Defence Minister General Tea Banh.

The Facebook user, who goes by the handle Gro Angel, posted photos of former opposition leaders and criticised the government.

General Chhum Sucheat, spokesman for the Defence Ministry, said Gro Angel intentionally aimed to create public misunderstanding.

“We would like to inform the public that Gro Angel is not involved with Samdech Pichey Tea Banh,” Gen Sucheat said.

“The ministry has warned the person who created the Facebook account to please stop immediately,” he added. “We appeal to police officials to investigate and take legal action against the person who created the account.”

Gen Banh yesterday said the person behind Gro Angel was a bad person for attempting to impersonate him on Facebook. He said impersonating him provoked unrest in the Kingdom.

“Some bad people tried to destroy our people’s safety – they fabricated stories to attack the government,” he said. “Those people have no good intentions, they just want to destroy peace.”

Gen Banh noted that the police have been informed so that an investigation can take place, and legal action be taken against the Facebook user.

Lieutenant General Chea Pov, director of the National Police’s anti-cybercrime department, yesterday said police have yet to identify the suspect.

“Our police forces are investigating this case, so we can’t give detailed information,” Lt Gen Pov said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Bodyguard Unit yesterday also slammed a Facebook user, Hang Hing, for impersonating General Hing Bun Hieng, commander of the Bodyguard Unit.
